Make a Difference This Season with Fun Ways to Support Local Businesses

Shopping locally has a profound effect on our communities, yet the specifics can often get lost in the rush of deciding where to shop. This season, we’re excited to share some enjoyable ways you can support locally owned and operated businesses while also making a positive impact!

Small businesses are the back bone of any community. That’s why at Chesapeake Bank we are always seeking ways to support them through initiatives like Boost events and our The Buck Stays Here program.

Did you know?

According to the Business Dasher in their article, “Powerful Shopping Local Statistics: The Latest Data:“

  • When you spend $100 at a local business, $68 stays in your community
  • In contrast, when you spend $100 less than $43 stays in town.
  • Buying local keeps 4X times more money in the economy compared to shopping at chains.
  • Dollars spent at independent businesses can recirculate 6 to 15 times in the local economy.
  • Small businesses give 250% more to community causes than large businesses.

Other studies also show that supporting local merchants creates jobs and contributes to a healthier environment. Where you spend can have a powerful impact, though the details can be overlooked in the hustle of where to shop.

Because making a difference feels good, we want to empower you with fun ways to support locally owned and locally operated businesses this season.

  • Show your favorite items and help a neighbor : Given that a 2022 study by the BusinessWire found the majority of Americans (64.2%) need help when it comes to holiday gifting and another 21% wait until after December first to start their shopping; why not share a post on social showcasing your favorite local items, why you love them, and tagging the business to help your peers get ideas for their shopping lists.

  • Leave Reviews: According to Louisa Zhou, 95% of customers read online reviews before buying a product. Not only that, but in the digital landscape businesses are ranked by engagement and reviews. So, whether it’s Facebook, Google, Trip Advisor, Yelp or another platform, leaving your positive review can give a business a powerful boost.

  • Use listings to plan: Build your gift list and challenge yourself to find local stores offering those items. Use The Buck Stays Here directory or a directory from your chamber of commerce or economic development association to plan your trip.

  • Plan your shopping around events: Check with your town government or chamber of commerce to see about special retail events that offer sales and savings. Then plan your shopping around those efforts.

  • Share your thanks: Aside from “gift-giving” at Christmas, this time of year usually brings an increase in reflection and gratitude. Why not be intentional and write a letter of thanks this year to someone using stationary from a local shop. You may also consider including a gift or gift card for the occasion.

  • Bring that biz to the party: Last minute invitations and holiday parties are all the buzz. Whether it’s an intimate dinner with friends, a white elephant, or the company party introduce the crowd to something from that cute store around the corner.

  • Tip extra: It always goes a longer way!

  • Volunteer: With holiday seasons being the busiest time of year for many, it can be hard to find sufficient staff. Consider volunteering time or services to help a local shop or non-profit.

  • Show your town pride: Buy ornaments and gifts bearing local landmarks and names.

  • Include any/all of these items on your own “pay it forward” or “kindness” lists: And don’t forget Giving Tuesday is coming soon on December 3.

However, you spend the holidays, thank you for supporting friends and neighbors in the communities we love so much. After all, we’re stronger together and that’s the Chesapeake Way.
